Kapp Construction selected by Catholic Central School for $5 Million Expansion

The Archdiocese of Cincinnati has approved plans for Catholic Central School to partner with local architect McCall Sharp Architecture on developing the construction design for their upcoming expansion and building project, and local contractor Kapp Construction has been selected as the Construction Manager At-Risk. Kapp Construction was chosen not solely because of their experience with school construction, but because of their experience with multi-phase projects with tight schedules that require maintaining continuous operations in the facility. McCall Sharp has extensive design experience and together the team will bring the most knowledge and local expertise to the project. “We are honored that Catholic Central School selected us for their expansion project”, said Randy Kapp, President of Kapp Construction. “We are committed to involving local partners from within our community in the construction of this facility that will serve CCS far into the future.”

McCall Sharp has already begun to develop the planning and design through input from school representatives involved with the project. Kapp Construction will provide pre-construction services on the project, including cost estimation, scheduling, and value engineering with the team.

“Catholic Central is pleased to work with two local companies with such strong credentials for a building project that is vital to our continued growth and viability,” said Dr. Kenith Britt, President of Catholic Central School.

Britt said the Cornerstone for the Future capital campaign has raised $4.2 million towards an initial goal of $5 million in cash gifts and pledges, but it will require the support of many others to bring the project to a successful completion. Much of this additional financial support will need to be realized over the next several months, as the start of construction (scheduled for Spring of 2013) is dependent upon successfully reaching the campaign goal and final approval from the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Steve Sharp, firm principal and Architect, is quoted as saying “McCall-Sharp Architecture is thrilled to be a part of Catholic Central’s Cornerstone for the Future. My children are recent graduates and they have blossomed with Catholic Central’s educational program. Personally it is my greatest pleasure to help continue this excellent educational program.”

The vision of this expansion and building project is to consolidate grades 3-12 at the East High Street campus. By building a 15 classroom high school wing to the rear of the current East High Street building, students in grades 3-6 will be able to occupy the current Junior/Senior High School classrooms. The original 1957 building that currently houses the Junior/Senior High School classrooms will be renovated, including a new boiler system and windows. Realizing the entire goal of the Cornerstone for the Future capital campaign would also allow for the construction of an elementary multi-purpose room, comprising of a gymnasium and cafeteria, and reworking of the front circle drive to create a ground-level accessible entrance, chapel, and additional parking.

Pastor Cain led the congregation in morning worship services, followed by a church lunch and dedication service. While the physical church building is only a mere structure of metal, wood and brick, it will provide the congregation a vehicle to bring many lives to Christ over the years to come.

The 18,000 sf facility sits on nearly 25 acres at the corner of Ohio S.R. 41 and Fox Hollow Road north of Springfield, just a mile and a half south of it’s previous location within the community of Lawrenceville. It has sanctuary seating for 300 and a control mezzanine for audio/visual controls, and the banquet and recreation area is approximately 4,100 sf, allowing the church plenty of space for it’s growing congregation. This expansion includes accessible classrooms, administrative offices and a kitchen all on one level.

Kapp Construction conducted value engineering prior to construction and suggested metal building design adjustments as well as electrical and mechanical redesigns, saving Lawrenceville Church of God nearly $500,000.The facility is constructed of concrete, pre-engineered metal building and masonry.
